Board Game: Zer gara gu, nor gara gu

Zer gara gu"Our children have to know where they come from in order to know where they are going" and 'zer gara gu, nor gara gu', a Basque culture card game, will help them with that." ~Ana de Castro, Councillor for the Promotion of the Basque Language at the City Council of Bilbao

"Zer gara gu, nor gara gu" is a question and answer card game about Basque culture that covers a wide range of subjects including geography, gastronomy, sports, traditions, music and literature. It is the only board game that deals with ALL BASQUE CULTURE in the Basque Language. The goal is ONLY TO LEARN while playing that Bernardo Atxaga is a Basque writer, Txindoki is a Basque mountain, Urumea is a Basque river, Mikel Laboa was a Basque singer, Baigorri is a Basque town...

"Zer gara gu, nor gara gu", which means "What are we, who are we?," is a question and answer card game about Basque culture that aims to fill a gap in the market of Basque children's games. It targets children, adolescents and Basque language-learners and covers a wide range of subjects including geography, gastronomy, sports, traditions, painting, music and literature.

The creator of the game, Gotzon Barrueta, could not understand why his son and daughter knew who Messi and Kun Aguero were but had never heard of Bernardo Atxaga (a Basque writer whose books have been translated into 20 languages). He decided to look in the shops for a question and answer game that would help his twins to learn about Basque culture by playing and having fun, which was also in the Basque language. When he failed to find a game that fit his requirements he did the next best thing--he invented his own. He also hopes it will reach the Diaspora, especially third or fourth generation Basques with an interest in the Basque Country and its culture.

Each card (200 in all) has a great photos from Euskal Herria--the Basque Country--of scenes and persons. There are also two playing modes. One of them, the traditional, with tabs and a big board (with the Euskal Herria map ) in which one must answer questions and be lucky to reach the finish first. The other way is to play with one pack of cards ( there are four different sets in the game box ) to make the game more portable.

TO PURCHASE

The game costs 29.90 euros and it can be purchased via the web at Elkar.com
